The
American Television drama series – Adam -12, aired to the public on
the NBC television network from the 21st
September 1968 to the 26th
August 1975. A total of 175 episodes of this detective series over
two seasons where aired. Jack Webb is created and executive produced
the show through his company Mark VII limited. Jack Webb, whose
career spanned over three decades, is also credited for his most
famous role in ‘The D.I’ as a Marine Corps drill instructor on
Parris Island. His company Mark VII also created and produced
‘Emergency!’ a medical drama and ‘Dragnet” a crime drama.
Adam 12 was considered by most to be Jack Webb’s adaptation of the
1967 crime drama ‘Dragnet” with Malloy and Reed appearing in a
few episodes of it.
Adam
12 follows the daily lives and activities of 2 Los Angeles Police
Department patrol officers Peter Malloy also known as simply ‘Pete”,
a veteran officer with seven years of experience; a role played by
Martin Miller; and newly recruited officer James Reed; a rookie also
known as ‘Jim’ and played by Kent McCord. Minor roles in the show
include that of Sergent William MacDonald known also as ‘Mac’ in
the show and whose character is portrayed by William Boyett.
The
audience gets a glimpse at the two characters lives as the try to
perform their sworn duty as LAPD officers to serve and protect.
Similar to the plot of Dragnet, the cases that Pete and Jim try to
conclude are taken from real life LAPD cases. The series begins with
Malloy making the decision to resign from active duty as a police
officer, a decision he made primarily because of the murder of his
police partner who was killed in the line of fire when the two had
attempted to foil an armed robbery. Eventually the police force
manage to convince him to stay and partner with the new recruit Jim
Reed who has just joined after completing his training at a police
academy and 2 years in the army. Reeds character is seen by the
audience as a great clash against Malloy’s; in fact in the pilot
episode of the series, Jim’s over eagerness and maverick attitude
to arrest several armed criminals, he deliberately disobeys his
partner Malloy’s orders. This tension goes on as the two try to
tolerate each others personalities so that they may work together.
